A must-do excursion for the adventurer, the Mackley tour follows the old explorer’s route through the wild, rugged back country of the Buller District. The Unimog is essential for this spectacular trip!

Travel up the dramatic coastal escarpment to the Denniston Plateau, where for over 100 years coal miners toiled underground. View interesting relics of this bygone era as the Unimog climbs up to Mt Rochfort from where superb panoramic scenery to the coast below and the steep mountains to the east is viewed. Bring your camera.

Then it’s back across the plateau, past the Burning Mine and up the Waimangaroa Valley before climbing up through thick forest onto the Mt William Range from where the beautiful Mackley country spreads out before you. We then descend steeply down the range with a stop for lunch at an old gold mining site.

Cross the crystal – clear Mackley River; no car will go here!  Through lush native rainforest, so many different plants, we wind along the narrow road with more stunning views.

We arrive at New Creek and then on the highway down the scenic Buller River gorge.  Berlins café for refreshments and 20 mins later we are back in Westport after an amazing journey of 145 km. A great day out.
